Essential Oil Recipes

essential oil bottle Let's talk about Essential Oil Recipes so you can apply some of the wonderful things about essential oils that you have read about on this website. For obvious reasons these recipes rely heavily on lavender essential oil. However, several other common essential oils are mentioned such as chamomile (chamomile German is recommended), tea tree oil, peppermint oil, citronella, and citrus oils. There are many potential applications for essential oils. Purchasing a good reference book on the subject will be a very worthwhile investment.

First Aid

Disclaimer - The following essential oil recipes are intended for treatment of minor ailments that would normally be treated at home. They are not intended to replace proper medical care. When in doubt, consult a physician.

Blisters - Avoid popping the blister. Apply one drop of lavender oil and one drop of chamomile gently working into the skin. Repeat as needed.

Burns - Apply ice and/or cold water for 5-10 minutes. Carefully dry and apply 1-2 drops (depending on size of burn) of lavender oil.

Cuts and Scrapes - Add 5 drops of lavender oil and 2 drops of tea tree oil to 2 cups of warm water. Mix thoroughly and bathe the wound with the mixture. Place 3-4 drops of lavender oil on a gauze bandage and apply to the wound. Change bandage as needed.

Headache - Combine 3 drops of lavender oil and 1 drop of peppermint oil. Massage the mixture into the temples, forehead, neck, base of the skull and hairline on the sides of the head.

Insect Bites and Stings - If a stinger remains, remove first. Apply one drop of lavender oil directly to the bite or sting.

Splinter - Remove the splinter with a pair of tweezers and apply a drop of lavender oil

Stinging Nettles - Wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water. Apply 5-10 drops of lavender oil to a clean wash cloth in a spot about the same size as the irritated skin. Hold the cloth on the affected skin for 30 minutes or until the irritation is relieved.

House Cleaning

Most essential oils have anitbacterial properties, so incorporating some of your favorites (lavender?) into your chores will cleanse, freshen the air, and may improve your mood despite the drudgery! Besides lavender, citrus oils such as lemon, lime, or grapefruit are particularly good for cleaning. Use a mild soap for intitial cleaning then add 5-7 drops of the essential oil to the rinse water.

Insect Repellent

Flying Insects - Hang strips of decorative cotton cloth near area that flying insects will tend to enter such as windows and doors. Apply 1 drop of oil to each cloth such as lavender for flies and moths, peppermint or citronella for mosquitoes.

Crawling Insects - Mix 5 drops of lavender oil and 5 drops of citronella. Dab a small amount with a cotton ball and place on windowsills, gaps along the wall and other locations that might offer the little critters a place to come inside.
