Lavender Bar Soap

Lavender Bar Soap is one of the most common lavender products and is always a favorite. The ingredients are typically hand mixed with great attention to detail by one of many small scale manufacturers. These producers may specialize in hand made soaps of different kinds and lavender soap may just be one of several varieties. Other soap makers may be associated with a lavender farm and may create multiple kinds of lavender products. As long as the supplier is experienced, most hand made soaps are a higher quality than the mass produced versions found in discount or even health stores.

Soap Base - Soap makers must start with a base that is either made from scratch through a "cold" process or they can purchase a base and use a "melt and pour" process. While most traditional soaps were made from animal fats, most modern hand made soap bases are made from plant oils such as olive oil, or coconut oil. Different bases will give the soap different properties. For instance, coconut oil makes a soap with very good lather, while olive oil produces a very mild soap.

Moisturizers - Most hand made lavender soap has one or more moisturizers added. Common additions include goats milk, shea butter, or glycerine. These ingredients are what make these small scale manufactured soaps so much better than common soaps. Such moisturizers are expensive and drive the price up, but your skin will appreciate it. My neice's children have chronic dry skin conditions. Lavender bar soap with goat's milk is the only soap product that will not cause itchy dry places on the child's skin. Even the brand name "baby soap" does not work as well.

Essential Oils - Obviously, lavender essential oil is the ingredient that gives lavender soap that wonderful distinctive aroma. But other essential oils are often added to take advantage of their properties too. Tea tree, eucalyptus, and chamomile oils are popular in combination with the lavender. For a unique scent, vanilla, rose, or lemon might be found.

Exfoliants - Some soap makers will add exfoliants to help remove the dead, dry skin cells, which makes the skin more healthy. Oatmeal, ground herbs or small seeds are sometimes added for this purpose as they provide a natural scrubbing effect like a loofah.

Shapes - Lavender bar soap is often shaped by pouring into special molds. The mold may simply include a company name or it may be a unique shape such as a heart or an animal. These special shapes can make this soap an extraordinary gift for a favorite friend.

Heart Shaped Lavender Soap

Lavender bar soap may be more expensive than your average scented soap, but as you can see, the extra care and quality ingredients included by these cottage manufacturers make it well worth the price.
